Spring 2010 Midwest Masters

Homework and Supply List

Class 1: Reversible Knitwear

Homework: None

Supplies:
Beginning Sample – Bring a few ounces of two sharply contrasting colors of worsted weight yarn and one pair of #6 needles.  Single points or circular needles are fine – they should be short as the sample piece will only have 12 stitches.

Basic knitting supplies: Paper, pen, crochet hook, scissors, stitch markers, tape measure.
Project Supplies (Choose one project):
Pot Holder - Two colors of kitchen cotton worsted weight.  One skein each and #6 needles.
Coaster - Two colors of fingering cotton, 1 skein of each, and #2 needles, short length
Head Band - Two colors sport weight yarn, 1 skein of each, and #3 and #4 circular needles 24”
Cat Bag - Worsted weight yarn in two colors, about 240 yards of each color.  Size 6 needles in 16" circular, size 6 double pointed needles (set of 5) and 5 short circular needles all in size 6.
Art Deco Tam – Sport weight yarn in two colors, about 4 oz each color. Circular needles in size 3 and/or 4 in 16" and 24" lengths and a set of double point needles.  Yarn needle for sewing up crown.

Class 2: Lapland Hand Garments

Homework:

With off-white Cascade 220 (or the yarn you will be using for practice), cast on 52 stitches.  Join and work in 2x2 ribbing for 7 rounds.

Round 8

Needle 1: Keep 13 stitches in ribbing

Needle 2: knit 13 stitches, increase 1, knit 13 stitches (total 27 stitches in stockinette).

Needle 3: rib 13 stitches

Keep the knitting on the needles and make sure you have enough yarn to knit another 20 rounds.

Supplies:

1. For practice, a skein of smooth, light colored worsted weight wool (Cascade 220 in off white is a good choice).

2. Small skeins of three additional colors for practice (a light, medium and darkish color to contrast with the off-white).

3. Double pointed needles in a size that gives you a gauge of approx 5 - 5.5 stitches/inch with the practice yarn. If you prefer to work with two circulars, or use the magic loop technique, bring needles for that instead of DPs.

4. One L-O-N-G (the longer, the better), straight, single pointed needle (size is not critical, between 2.0 and 3.25 mm (US 0 - 3), with a point protector to fit.

5.  Double pointed needles in several sizes.  Depending on whether you are a loose or tight knitter, you may want to bring several sets from among the following:  1.25 mm/US 0000, 1.5 mm/US 000, 1.75 mm/US 00, 2.0 mm/US 0, 2.25 mm/US 1, and 2.50/US 1.5.  If you want to buy DP needles, Susan Bates makes a great, inexpensive set (Sock Set) of color coded aluminum DP needles for under $15.

Materials fee: $18 payable to teacher. Susanna will supply Finnish yarn and instructions for a pair of wristlets worked in the Rovaniemi mitten technique.

Class 3: Design with UNPATTERNS

Homework: Knit up a 5"x5" swatch in any yarn (the yarn you would like to use for your full-sized sweater) - DO NOT BIND OFF.

Supplies:
Homework swatch and needles, along with one size larger and one size smaller. Calculator plus basic knitting supplies: Paper, pen, crochet hook, scissors, stitch markers, tape measure. Also bring a garment that fits well (a template garment) - best if this garment is similar in yarn weight to swatching yarn.

Materials fee: $6 payable to teacher. Students will take home their choice of garment UNPATTERN

Class 4: Spinning Commercial Yarns

Homework: None

Supplies:
Spinning wheel in good working condition, lazy kate, 3 bobbins, miscellaneous balls of commercial yarns of all kinds and sizes. Wheels can be rented from Yarns by Design.

Materials fee: $15 paid to teacher

Class 5: Japanese Short Rows

Homework:
Make two swatches according to the directions below, using one of your colors. We will continue knitting on both swatches using the contrasting color.

I am giving you a choice about how big to make your swatches because I am trying to create a way for speedy and deliberate knitters to complete in-class knitting at roughly the same time. Often, everyone shows up to class having made the smaller size swatches which defeats the whole idea. Please, if you are a speedy knitter, make the larger swatches. If you like to take your time, knit the smaller version.

1. Cast on 45 stitches or 30 stitches. Work 5 rows of ribbing. Continue in stockinette until the swatch measures approximately 3 inches high (end after you have completed a knit row). Leave about a 4” tail and keep the swatch on the needle, ready for you to begin a purl row.
2. Knit a second, (almost) identical swatch. On this swatch you should be ready to begin a knit row. Cut the yarn (4” tail) and leave the swatch on the needle.

Supplies:
1. Smooth, worsted weight wool (Cascade 220 is perfect) or cotton in two contrasting colors. Keep both colors light to medium in value so you can see easily what you are doing.
2. Needles to match your yarn (aim for a gauge of approx 19-20 stitches/4 inches). Circular needles (24” or longer) are STRONGLY recommended. If you prefer to work on straight needles, please still bring a 24” circular needle in the same size so that you can complete one part of the in-class lesson on the circular needle (the circular needle will make it easier).
3. An extra needle in the same size you used to make the swatches.
4. Seven locking stitch markers

Class 6: Cuff Craze

Bring supplies as listed for each cuff plus basic knitting supplies: darning needle, scissors, tape measure, etc. and homework.

Materials Fee: $6 per student (students take home a Sock Unpattern™) payable to instuctor

We will be working three to four separate cuffs in class, which can serve as the start of three or four new sock projects. You need yarn and needles for each, as listed below. It would be a good idea to put each cuff and its needles in a separate Ziploc bag, marked with the Cuff #.

CUFF #1:
Supplies:
One skein sock yarn and appropriate needles, any format

Homework:
Cast on appropriate number of sts for your yarn and your favorite sock pattern. Join to work in the round and knit 4 rounds. Leave sts on needles, with yarn attached, and bring this project to class.

CUFF #2:
Supplies:
One skein solid-color worsted-weight yarn (partial ball o.k.) and size 6 DPNs (4.25 mm)
One (partial/leftover) skein worsted-weight yarn in a contrasting color (variegated is great for this)

Homework:
Cast on 18 stitches with main color (provisonal method is great, if you know one.). Do not join to work in the round; work flat in garter stitch (knitting all sts in every row) until work measures 9” from cast-on edge. Either bind off all sts and sew cast-on edge to cast-off edge, or remove provisional cast-on and graft ends together to form a tube); bring tube, yarn, contrasting yarn, and needles to class.

CUFF #3:
Supplies:
One skein sock yarn and appropriate needles, any format

Homework:
Cast on a multiple of 8 that is closest to the appropriate number of sts for your yarn and your favorite sock pattern. Join to work in the round, and work 2 rounds in K1, P1 rib. Leave sts on needles, with yarn attached, and bring this project to class.

CUFF #4
[OPTIONAL: AS CLASS TIME PERMITS]

Supplies:
One skein self-striping sock yarn (Opal, Step, etc.) and appropriate needles

Homework:
Cast on appropriate number of sts for your yarn and your favorite sock pattern. Join to work in the round and purl one round; leave sts on needles, with yarn attached, and bring this project to class.

Class 7: Two-Thirds Sachet

Homework:
Cast on 20 stitches and work in garter stitch for 1-2 inches. Adjust your needles until you achieve a gauge of approximately 6½ stitches per inch.

Supplies:
1. One skein smooth, solid color DK/Sport weight yarn. I use cotton or cotton blends for most of my sachets but other fibers are fine as well
2. Appropriate size needles. You will want to knit the sachet at a tight tension to help the beads stay in place. Do a gauge swatch and bring needles that will give you a gauge of approximately 26 stitches/10 cm/4 inches.
3. One tube Japanese seed beads, size 6. (Available at Yarns by Design in limited color choices) Be sure and look for high quality Japanese seed beads; pre-strung Czech beads in hanks do not work well with yarn. Make sure that a double strand of your yarn fits through the holes of your beads.
4. A tea towel, cloth diaper or handkerchief. This will help the beads stay in place as you string them.
5. A “big eye” beading needle
6. Two rubber ring markers
7. Usual knitting supplies: Scissors, stitch markers, tape measure, etc.
